About FREOPP

The Foundation for Research on Equal Opportunity (FREOPP) is a non-profit, non-partisan think tank focused on expanding economic opportunity to those who least have it, using the tools of individual liberty, free enterprise, technological innovation, and pluralism. All research conducted by FREOPP considers the impact of public policies and proposed reforms on those with incomes or wealth below the U.S. median.

FREOPP was founded in 2016 by Avik Roy and Ames Brown. We are headquartered in downtown Austin, Texas, and also have offices in downtown Washington, D.C. For more information about FREOPP’s culture and core values, visit mission.freopp.org.

Why work at FREOPP?

FREOPP is a small and growing organization where you, as an individual, can have a major impact on our success. We care about making sure that our team members have the opportunity to learn new skills and take on new responsibilities. And FREOPP is doing meaningful work that has, to date, improved the lives of over 150 million Americans.

Development Director

Location: Preference for Austin, Washington, D.C., or a major fundraising area (San Francisco Bay area, Texas, Florida, New York City, Boston).
FREOPP seeks a Director of Development to help take its already thriving fundraising operations to the next level. As the Director of Development at FREOPP, you will be responsible for cultivating relationships with individual donors and foundations to secure major gifts and grants in support of our research and advocacy efforts. The ideal candidate will be highly organized with exceptional relationship-building skills.

For more details about the Development Director position, please visit this page.

Communications Manager

Location: Preference for Austin, Washington, D.C., but we will also consider exceptional candidates who want to work virtually.

FREOPP is seeking a dynamic and experienced Communications Manager who can help to maximize the public impact of FREOPP scholars’ research and ideas to expand equal opportunity in America. As the Communications Manager, you will play a crucial role in shaping and disseminating our organization’s messages, research findings, and policy recommendations. Your work will contribute to increasing awareness, engagement, and support for our mission to promote equal opportunity for all.

Research Scholars

Location: Depends on candidate; preference for Washington, D.C. or Austin, Tex.
FREOPP seeks to expand our policy research team in several strategic areas, as described below. The ideal research scholar is someone committed to FREOPP’s mission; who can develop ideas that can appeal to both Republicans and Democrats; and who is very good at writing both op-eds and long-form white papers that can communicate complex ideas to a lay audience.

Facility with quantitative tools like Microsoft Excel and Stata is a plus. The best policy scholars are self-starters, who require little coaching or advice. Having said that, we have had much success training up those who are earlier in their policy research careers.

We are actively looking for both full-time and freelance scholars in the following areas:

Bitcoin. Bitcoin has the potential to help protect Americans from inflation, and to improve the value and the quality of payments and financial services. FREOPP is actively researching ways to improve the regulation of Bitcoin and other digital assets so that it can expand economic opportunity to those who least have it. We are looking for candidates who can contribute their own writing to this effort, and to collaborate with the existing team.

Energy. Costly and unreliable energy hurts the poor the most, because low-income Americans lack the disposable income to absorb higher prices and lower reliability. Natural gas is the cleanest of the fossil fuels, in terms of carbon emissions, and as such has a critical role in meeting America’s energy needs. Similarly, nuclear power has the density and reliability needed to supply Americans with low-carbon electricity. We are looking for candidates with significant technical knowledge about energy, electricity, and/or climate science to contribute our energy policy research program.

Health Care. American health care is the costliest in the world, and the U.S. health care system is among the world’s least fiscally sustainable. It is possible to have both affordable and innovative care, as FREOPP’s World Index of Healthcare Innovation has shown. FREOPP is looking for free-market-oriented health care scholars who understand that artificial monopolies, corporate subsidies, and regulatory barriers have increased prices and reduced competition in U.S. health care, harming both patients and taxpayers. We are, in particular, interested in lowering the prices of hospital care, prescription drugs, and physician care through pro-competitive measures.

Political Competition. Congress is increasingly unable to enact meaningful policy reforms, because candidates for office are incentivized to cater to the extreme edges of the electorate instead of the overwhelming majority that embraces the principle of equal opportunity for all Americans. FREOPP is seeking a scholar who can write about promising reforms that can help ensure that elected officials are incentivized to represent the broad swath of their constituents, including ballot access reform, open primaries, ranked-choice voting, term limits, and election integrity.

Tax Reform. The best ideas for tax reform increase economic growth for all strata of society, especially by increasing demand for hourly-wage labor and reducing the cost of living. FREOPP seeks scholars who have the analytical and literary capability to drive inclusive, pro-growth tax reform.

How to apply: Please fill out the form at the top of this page with your LinkedIn profile, your Twitter handle, your cover letter, your résumé, and three references. In addition, please email FREOPP Chief Research Officer Michael Franc at inquiries@freopp.org with the following in PDF form:

  • Résumé;
  • Cover letter detailing why you think you are a strong candidate for this position; why you believe in FREOPP’s mission; and your compensation expectations;
  • Three writing samples, ideally op-eds and long-form white papers;
  • Three references, including email addresses, telephone numbers, and a description of each reference’s relationship to the candidate.

Again, please note that these positions are open to scholars who are seeking part-time or freelance work, as well as those seeking full-time positions.

Even if one of the above roles doesn’t suit you, we always consider inquiries from talented people who are passionate about FREOPP’s mission. Fill out the form below to tell us more about yourself and what you’re interested in doing at FREOPP. Please have the URL for your LinkedIn profile available for entry.
